9 Symptoms of Metabolic Damage That Could Be Affecting Your Fertility
You’ve spent the last year or two trying to get pregnant. You’re taking the supplements, changing your diet, tracking your cycle, and maybe even trying medications like Letrozole. But despite everything you’re doing, you’re STILL not ovulating consistently or getting pregnant.
And on top of your fertility struggles, you’re waking up at 3 a.m. every night, you’re cold ALL the time, you’re constantly bloated or constipated, your energy crashes every afternoon, and you can’t remember the last time you actually felt good in your body.
What if these symptoms are telling us something important about your metabolic health?
I talk a lot about metabolic damage and how it may be contributing to missing periods, irregular menstrual cycles, ovulatory dysfunction, and infertility. But I want you to understand what I actually mean when I say metabolic damage, because your metabolism is about SO much more than how easily you gain or lose weight.
And when you’re struggling to get pregnant, it’s one of the first places I want to investigate.
What Is Metabolic Damage?
First, let’s talk about what your metabolism actually is.
Your metabolism is how your body takes the raw materials from food and turns them into usable energy.
That energy supports EVERYTHING happening in your body, including your thyroid, digestion, brain, nervous system, reproductive hormones, ovaries, and ultimately your ability to ovulate and get pregnant.
When most people hear the word metabolism, they immediately think about weight. They think about having a fast metabolism or a slow metabolism, how many calories they’re burning, or whether they can easily lose weight.
But your metabolism is SO much more than that.
When I talk about metabolic damage, I’m generally referring to patterns of inadequate energy availability, metabolic adaptation, or disrupted metabolic function that may be affecting how the body operates.
It’s important to understand that “metabolic damage” isn’t a formal medical diagnosis, and these patterns aren’t necessarily permanent.
But inadequate energy availability, thyroid dysfunction, and certain metabolic conditions can absolutely affect menstrual cycles and ovulation.
And that’s why I want you to understand the connection.
Your Metabolism Is the Foundation of Your Fertility
Imagine you’re building a house, and that house represents your fertility.
You’ve got the walls, the floors, the roof, the electrical system, the plumbing, and all the different pieces that have to come together to create a fully functioning home.
I want you to think about those pieces as all the different systems that contribute to your fertility.
Your thyroid is one piece. Your reproductive hormones are another. Your nervous system, digestion, blood sugar regulation, and nutrient status are all important parts of that house.
But before you can build ANY of those things, you have to have a solid foundation.
You can’t build a house on sand and expect it to remain structurally sound.
It doesn’t matter how beautiful the roof is or how perfectly you’ve put together the walls. If the foundation underneath that house isn’t stable, you’re going to continue having problems.
And I want you to think about your metabolism as that foundation.
Because you can focus all day long on trying to increase your progesterone, improve your estrogen, or get your ovaries to release an egg.
But if your body doesn’t have the energy and metabolic support it needs to carry out those functions, you may be missing a really important piece of the fertility picture.
9 Symptoms That Make Me Want to Investigate Metabolic Health
When I’m working with a woman who has been trying to get pregnant for one, two, or even five years, I don’t just want to know what her estrogen and progesterone levels are.
I want to know how she actually FEELS.
Here are nine symptoms and patterns that make me want to investigate further.
1. You’re Cold ALL the Time
You’re wearing a sweatshirt when everyone else is comfortable. Your hands and feet are constantly freezing, and your basal body temperature may be consistently low.
Thyroid hormones help regulate metabolism and heat production, so persistent cold intolerance is something worth investigating, especially when it’s happening alongside fatigue, constipation, or menstrual irregularities.
2. You’re Waking Up Between 2–4 a.m.
Maybe you fall asleep just fine, but almost every night you wake up around 3 a.m. and struggle to fall back asleep.
Sleep disruptions can have several causes, including stress, sleep disorders, hormonal changes, and other medical conditions.
But when someone is also struggling with low energy, inconsistent eating, and irregular ovulation, I want to understand whether inadequate nourishment, nervous system dysfunction, or your circadian rhythm is influencing sleep quality, and as a result, impacting your fertility.
3. You’re Constantly Bloated or Constipated
You feel uncomfortable after meals, your digestion is unpredictable, and sometimes you go days without having a bowel movement.
Thyroid dysfunction can slow gastrointestinal motility, and inadequate food intake can also contribute to constipation.
Your digestion may be giving us important clues about your fertility, including if you are properly digesting and absorbing all the food (and supplements) you’re working so hard to eat more of to improve your fertility.
4. You’re Exhausted Even When You’re Sleeping
You wake up tired, need caffeine to get through the morning, and feel like you hit a wall every afternoon.
Fatigue can have many causes, including insufficient energy intake, iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, poor sleep, and other medical conditions.
Rather than assuming you need another supplement or more caffeine, I want to understand WHY you’re so exhausted and how that may be impacting your fertility.
5. You’re Peeing All the Time
Maybe you’re constantly looking for the nearest bathroom or waking up throughout the night to urinate.
While frequent urination can have multiple root causes, this is a common symptoms we hear in our clients with low estrogen, due to the way low estrogen impacts and thins not only the uterine lining, but the bladder lining as well.
6. You Feel Terrible After Eating Carbohydrates
Maybe you feel sleepy after meals, experience energy crashes, or notice that certain meals leave you feeling shaky or hungry again shortly afterward.
Blood sugar regulation, meal composition, and overall energy intake can all play a role in how you feel after eating.
And if you’ve spent years avoiding carbohydrates because you’re worried about weight gain, that tells me so much about where your metabolism, and fertility, may be impacted right now.
7. You’re Gaining Weight Easily or Struggling With Weight Changes
You feel like you’re doing everything right with nutrition and exercise, but your weight is changing in ways you don’t understand.
Weight changes alone can’t tell us whether your metabolism is functioning properly.
But when they’re happening alongside cold intolerance, fatigue, constipation, and cycle irregularities and infertility, I want to explore whether thyroid function, energy availability, or other factors may be involved.
8. Your Period Is Missing or Your Cycles Are Irregular
Maybe your period disappeared after coming off birth control. Maybe you only get a period every few months, or your cycles have become increasingly unpredictable.
The moment I hear from a client that they have a missing or irregular period, I immediately know that means their metabolism has also been impacted, too.
9. You’re Not Ovulating Consistently or Have Short Luteal Phases
Maybe you’re getting a monthly bleed but never confirming ovulation.
Or maybe you are ovulating, but your luteal phase is consistently short, and you’re concerned about progesterone production.
These patterns deserve a closer look at your reproductive hormones, cycle history, and the other systems that influence ovulation.
Your Body May Be Operating on Low Power Mode
Here’s another way I explain what can happen after years of dieting, underfueling, overexercising, or simply not getting the resources your body needs.
Think about your phone.
You know how when your phone gets down to 10% battery, it asks whether you want to switch into low power mode?
When you do, your phone starts conserving energy.
You can still make a phone call. You can still send a text. You can still do some of the essential things your phone needs to do.
But certain functions slow down, and background activity gets limited.
Your phone isn’t operating with the same capacity it would have if the battery were fully charged.
And that’s a helpful way to think about what can happen when your body is chronically under-resourced.
Your body can adapt to limited energy availability by conserving resources, and one of the systems that can be affected is reproduction.
Because your body needs energy to support the hormonal communication between your brain and ovaries, develop follicles, and ovulate.
This is why someone can be eating what they consider a healthy diet, exercising consistently, and doing everything they think they should be doing for their fertility, but still not ovulating.
Eating healthy doesn’t automatically mean you’re eating ENOUGH to support your fertility.
How We Help Women Address the Underlying Factors Affecting Ovulation
Inside the Nourished Fertility Method, we look at the full picture.
We review your symptoms, menstrual cycle history, nutrition, exercise, and relevant laboratory findings to understand what may be contributing to your fertility struggles.
For some women, that means addressing years of inadequate nourishment and excessive exercise.
For others, we’re investigating thyroid dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies, or blood sugar and insulin regulation.
And for many women, several factors need attention together.
The goal is to create a Custom Fertility Recovery Protocol that supports your overall fertility while addressing the factors that may be affecting ovulation.
Because I don’t just want you to get your period back.
I want you to wake up feeling rested, have more stable energy, enjoy your meals without feeling miserable afterward, sleep better, and feel GOOD in your body again. I want you to become the healthy mom you dream of being.
And if you’ve been struggling to get pregnant for years, you deserve more than another month of wondering why your body isn’t ovulating.
